On the Liverpool side, Virgil van Dijk acknowledged that the team struggled to implement a more direct style of play in the first half against City and emphasized the importance of eliminating late goals that have hampered their title defense.

"We tried to adopt a more direct strategy, utilizing long balls to exploit spaces behind the defense because we recognized how City likes to close off certain areas. Unfortunately, we didn’t execute well enough, and we failed to apply the necessary pressure when they had possession," Van Dijk explained.
Haaland’s penalty was significant, marking the fourth winning goal against Liverpool in the Premier League that came in the 90th minute or later this season. Notably, Slot’s team has also drawn two league matches after conceding late goals.
Van Dijk concluded, "While you might compare this goal to others we conceded late, this one stands apart. The fact remains, we must improve to avoid these late lapses."
