New research from the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) paints a worrying picture. About 60% of schools across the country are facing teaching vacancies, yet teachers are not applying. This has led to a situation where three-quarters of schools advertising teaching jobs received no applications whatsoever in the last six months.
The consequences are dire. Almost one in five schools has had to drop subjects due to staff shortages, and over half have restricted student access to certain subjects. Imagine a school where students can't study their preferred subjects or where the teaching staff changes frequently. It's a recipe for educational disruption.
But here's where it gets controversial. The research also highlights the reasons behind this crisis. Teachers are citing high accommodation costs near schools, a lack of full-time contracts, and more attractive employment options elsewhere. It's a stark reminder that teaching, a noble profession, is facing challenges in attracting and retaining talent.
And this is the part most people miss. The TUI survey found that 84% of those surveyed believe the government isn't doing enough to tackle teacher shortages. Schools are resorting to desperate measures, relying on students in their second year of education masters to fill the gaps, and employing unqualified individuals.
The TUI is calling on the Department of Education to take urgent action. They propose measures like providing full-time jobs for new teachers, reducing the duration of the education masters, and offering incentives for teachers to return from abroad.
TUI President Anthony Quinn sums it up perfectly: "The continuing inaction of the department is absolutely startling."
